Brandborg Winery is located in Elkton, the most northwest and marine influenced region of the Umpqua Valley. It opened in 2002 and planting of the Estate Vineyard began at their ranch 4 miles southwest of town, primarily to Dijon clones of pinot noir. The site, at 750' to 1100', sits above the fog with southern exposures and is only 25 miles from the ocean. The soils are sand and clay loamswell suited to grape production.
While their vineyard matures, Brandborg Winery will make wine from grapes from the Umpqua Valley. The marine influence permits only cool climate varietals to ripen. They make pinot noir, riesling and gewurztraminer from the Bradley Vineyard, planted in Elkton in 1983. From the Marshanne Vineyard near Oakland, a warmer inland site, they harvested syrah and cabernet franc. Pinot noir and pinot gris comes from the Melrose Vineyard and are both very lush and fruity. Three clones of pinot noir from the Red Hill Vineyard, the highest in the Umpqua AVA, are used. These grapes see the biggest daily temperature swings in the area and are very well structured.
There is a $5 tasting fee that is refundable with purchase.
